Background of the study
Digital narratives, particularly vlogs, have emerged as influential platforms for personal storytelling and cultural expression in Nigeria. Vlogging practices introduce innovative phonological features, as speakers adapt their pronunciation, intonation, and speech rhythm to suit digital media’s informal and spontaneous context. This study examines how digital narratives affect Nigerian phonology by analyzing vlogs produced by Nigerian content creators. It explores changes such as vowel modification, stress alterations, and intonation shifts that occur when traditional speech patterns meet the fast-paced demands of online video production (Ogunleye, 2023; Musa, 2024). These phonological adaptations not only facilitate effective digital communication but also contribute to the formation of new linguistic identities among vloggers. The research utilizes acoustic analysis and content analysis of vlog recordings to document these changes, thereby highlighting the dynamic interaction between technology and language. The findings aim to inform language education and media training programs by revealing how digital narratives reshape phonetic practices in contemporary Nigeria.
Statement of the problem
Despite the growing prominence of vlogging in Nigeria, there is scant research on how digital narratives influence phonological features. The lack of empirical studies examining pronunciation and intonation shifts in vlogs leaves a gap in understanding the broader impact of digital media on Nigerian phonology (Ogunleye, 2023). This research gap hinders the development of adaptive language teaching methods and media strategies that accommodate evolving phonetic trends in digital communication.
Objectives of the study:
• To document phonological changes in Nigerian vlogs.
• To analyze the impact of digital narratives on speech patterns.
• To propose recommendations for integrating digital phonology in language education.
Research questions:
• What phonological features are altered in Nigerian vlogs?
• How do digital narratives influence these changes?
• What implications do these shifts have for communication?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the intersection of digital media and phonology, offering insights into how vlogging practices are reshaping Nigerian speech patterns. The findings will benefit educators, media trainers, and linguists by informing strategies that align language instruction with modern communication trends (Musa, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to vlogging practices in Nigeria and does not consider other forms of digital narratives or offline speech.
Definitions of terms:
• Digital Narratives: Storytelling through digital media platforms.
• Phonology: The study of speech sounds.
• Vlogging: The practice of creating video blogs.
